ABOUT UNITED ACTIVITIES UNLIMITED: United Activities Unlimited Inc. (UAU) is a Staten Island, a community-based non-profit that provides educational, recreational, enrichment, prevention, and workforce development programs and services. UAU was incorporated in 1977 as the result of a community initiative by concerned citizens who responded to the challenge of providing positive alternatives to young people in the wake of the financial crisis of New York City that forced the closing of many of the Board of Education afternoon and evening centers.

Since then, UAU has grown from a single recreation center to a borough-wide network of comprehensive programs, services, and community centers, designed to educate, inspire and empower Staten Island children, youth, and adults. Within its Workforce Development division, team members strive for continued personal, professional, and community growth. The Workforce team creates opportunities for local youth and provides culturally competent training and experiences to support their entry to the modern workforce.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The person selected for this position will be under the direct supervision of an SYEP Employment Specialist and will be responsible for providing an appropriately safe, caring, and enriching environment for youth enrolled in United Activities Unlimited (UAU) programming. Job-Readiness Counselors will play an active role in supervising and mentoring SYEP participants as they enter the workforce. Job-Readiness Counselors are also responsible for establishing and maintaining a working relationship with worksite supervisors. Job-Readiness Counselors must conduct themselves in an appropriate manner, setting the example for participants, parents, and co-workers by reflecting the UAU core values of compassion, honesty, respect, and responsibility. Job-Readiness Counselors are responsible for complying with all standards set by United Activities Unlimited. Job-Readiness Counselors selected are expected to possess a deep interest and passion for youth development and achievement. Candidates familiar with personal, demographic, and cultural barriers related to youth employment are encouraged to apply. The selected Job-Readiness Counselors should support the creation of successful youth engagement, teachable moments, and lasting rapport with SYEP participants. Experience working with diverse populations and ESL students is a plus. The employee agrees by signing below that this employment contract is considered “at-will” and can be terminated at the employer’s discretion.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND JOB DUTIES:

  • Mentor participants by hosting bi-weekly, 15-minute one-on-one sessions with each participant to monitor their progress, gain an understanding of what they are working on and offer them guidance on how to improve (with supervisor feedback in mind)
  • Supplement bi-weekly sessions with informal check-ins, and mentorship on an as-needed basis
  • Conduct check-ins with worksites (routinely twice per week while distributing and collecting timesheets, and on an as-needed basis)
  • Implement strategies around supporting employers and maintaining relationships
  • Relay all participant or worksite issues to the Employment Specialist, and assist them in implementing solutions

Address and document issues such as participant absence/lateness, questions about dates, pay, etc. Check with and report to Employment Specialist about any chronic issues with lateness, timesheets, DYCD/UAU required documents

Complete weekly assessments, including a written summary of the week based on conversations with worksite supervisor and participants, and field observation Conduct weekly interviews with both the participants and worksite supervisors as part of weekly assessment reports

  • Distribute and collect all relevant documents from worksites, including timesheets, evaluations, and reflections, and ensure accuracy and completion in order to meet strict deadlines
  • Submit timesheets, weekly assessments, and any other relevant documents to the Employment Specialist in a timely manner using the google drive and other assigned platform
  • Participate in weekly meetings with Employment Specialist and Employer Engagement team
  • Attend training and workshops as required
  • Complete Basecamp check-ins twice per day
  • Assist with other department duties and projects as needed

JOB QUALIFICATIONS and SKILLS:

  • College graduate or 2+ years of experience in youth services or working with youth from various populations
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a car on a daily basis
  • Ability to serve as a strong role model and provide guidance to young workers
  • Ability to collaborate with Employment Specialists and other team members to mediate conflicts as needed
  • Ability to mentor participants while effectively completing independent tasks
  • Excellent written and communication skills
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills
  • Flexibility in schedule, including occasional evenings/weekends
  • Professional attitude and demeanor
  • Business casual dress, including UAU-branded attire
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Excels in a collaborative environment
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, address, and solve problems

  • Spanish speaking proficiency is a plus

Contract Terms

  • Employment will terminate upon the conclusion of the SYEP 2021 Program contract year, on or about the end of August 2021
